I’ve been very happy w/ my Nuvi 760 over the past 2.5 years. I decided to update the maps as it had been a while. St. Louis has had major construction on the main thoroughfare through the city (I-64), but it has been totally complete for about 9 months. None of the new/changed exits are correct (even though stretches of the highway have been open for significantly longer than a year) and I also tried to find a gas station and the place it was supposed to be (near the Galleria) was an empty grass lot, so it had been closed/gone for a LONG time. I contacted the company and here’s what they said (after going back and forth a couple times about the version of the maps I had loaded):

“If you do find any errors, omissions or discrepancies in our mapping programs, we urge you to fill out an Error Report Form. The form is evaluated, then if necessary, sent to the appropriate data vendor to investigate and correct for the next mapping update.”

I then asked for a refund as I saw 0 value in the upgrade & I shouldn’t have to pay for maps that I update myself through their system, then have to pay AGAIN for the update.

    Their response was:

“I will be happy to assist you with your request regarding your maps. Unfortunately we are not able to issue a refund for used software and because the maps are tied to your unit we can not refund back the purchase cost.”

Basically, thanks for the $75, now go away.

It would have helped considerably for the vendor to make it clear that the download time would involve several hours when working with dsl speeds. I would have scheduled the download at a time when the time was available without interuption.

This was so much easier than the download process from Garmin. I updated my Nuvi 650 with no problems.

I am one of those who purchased the code Sunday May 2 and could not download it. It is working fine now I am happy to report and it is updating just fine. I docked them a star for the pain yesterday!

QUICK SUMMARY: My one-star review is strictly for the ease-of-installation, not for the actual maps. I can’t evaluate the Garmin maps because I can’t even install this map update on my brand-new Garmin eTrex Vista HCx Color High-Sensitivity Mapping Handheld GPS! It’s taken me all week and a lot of Garmin Technical Support’s time to learn why not. Non-savvy GPS customers ought to read my review.

Background: I bought a Garmin eTrex Venture Cx GPS four years ago. At that same time, I bought City Navigator v8 (2006), and happily loaded the maps onto my Garmin GPS. And for the last four years, I’ve successfully used it on the road, although the map data clearly needed updating with each successive year.

My Venture Cx is rather worn (I use it on the trail, too), so I thought I’d buy a Garmin Map Update and apply it to a brand-new Garmin eTrex GPS. Note: Unlike City Navigator, which can be loaded onto TWO Garmin GPS devices, the Garmin nuvi Map Update can be associated with only ONE Garmin GPS, and the association is not changeable. See why I wanted to associate it with a new Garmin GPS?

(Full disclosure: I bought the Lifetime Update, not the OneTime update. The maps are identical, but the Lifetime update lets you continue to update your GPS’s maps, up to four times a year).

So I bought this nuvi Map Update gift card and got it two days later from Amazon. Since the Vista HCx already has basic mapping data, I thought it would be a simple matter to activate the gift card’s product key code, then associate the map update to the new Vista HCx. Activating the card went smoothly enough, but when I tried to associate the update to my new Vista HCx GPS unit, the Garmin website said my maps were already updated. Huh? What about that long map download? I didn’t have the latest updates on my Vista HCx!

So I called Garmin Support. Ah, I see, I have to first load the 2006 City Navigator’s maps to my Vista HCx, and *THEN* I can associate the map update to my new GPS. Okay, so I spent an evening finding that old DVD, loading it onto my laptop, and transferring map data to my GPS. Fine.

Next day, I try associating my nuvi Map Update maps to my Vista HCx with City Navigator maps already installed. Same problem – the automatic download won’t start, it says I’ve got the latest maps already installed — those would be the maps from 2006. Huh?

Another call to Garmin. First guy can’t help me – he’s mystified. Transfers me to a tech support specialist who’s equally stumped. A l-o-n-g time later, Garmin Tech Support stumbles upon the problem. I have “City Navigator” not “City Navigator NT”. What’s the “NT” mean? Who knows? But what it means is that although I own City Navigator, I don’t own the right kind of City Navigator that can work with nuvi Map Updates. So I either have to seek a refund from Garmin, or pony up another hundred bucks to buy “City Navigator NT” just so I can use the nuvi Map Update maps.

Where do I begin my rant? That Garmin has two map products that are almost identically named, but differentiated enough that I can’t use my $100 Lifetime Update maps? That Garmin’s website can’t detect what’s wrong (rather than just saying my four-year-old maps are up-to-date)? That Garmin’s Tech Support can’t quickly diagnose the problem? That nowhere on the gift card does it say “Only updates City Navigator ***NT*** maps”? That’s Garmin’s website only says that my Vista HCx is compatible with nuvi Lifetime Updates with no mention of the “NT” requirement? That no one knows what the “NT” stands for?

Conclusion: If you’re buying this update, be sure you’ve got “City Navigator NT” maps already installed on my your GPS!
